Saint Francis of Assisi
Saint Francis of Assisi was an Italian friar who founded the Franciscan Order. The son of a
wealthy merchant, he lived a life of indulgence and excess until a religious vision promoted him to renounce
his wealth and embrace poverty. His preaching quickly earned him a following, which led his founding several
religious orders.
Saint Francis of Assisi is credited with creating the first Christmas manger scene, and is the patron saint of
animals and the environment. His feast day is October 4th.
