Virgin Mary Grotto

The Virgin Mary in the Grotto statue represents Mary's 1858 appearances to 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, France. According to Bernadette, Mary asked her to dig a hole and drink from the spring that emerged. As word spread, people with medical problems began drinking the water. News of miraculous cures followed and several were confirmed by the 1860s. Lourdes became a destination for pilgrims and Bernadette was eventually canonized as a saint.

This following concrete statue of the Virgin Mary is the traditional model used in a grotto setting, but this one is displayed in a garden:
